The Florida Atlantic University (FAU) Student Chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) hosted a mini-conference, “Advocacy for Action to Support Education,” held at the Boca Raton campus. The purpose of the event was to assist students in building their educational policy knowledge base and to help develop their advocacy skills. Dr. Katie Miller, Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Exceptional Student Education (ESE) gave opening remarks. The event featured a panel discussion featuring Florida State Senator Mr. Kevin Rader among others. Following the panel discussion on the importance of advocacy for educators and implementing best practices at the school district level, attendees had two instructional sessions. The first session focused on tips for meeting with legislators and the second session focused on state level issues and advocacy. Dr. Valerie Bristor, Dean of the College of Education at FAU said of the event, “I encourage all of our future teachers to get involved in the process, as advocacy is such an important part of our profession.” Way to go FAU Student CEC!
