U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos recently convened an organizational meeting of the Federal Commission on School Safety. The meeting was not open to the public or the press. In addition to Secretary DeVos, the Commission included Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar and Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen.
The Commission “discussed staffing, the timeline for future meetings with stakeholders, coordination with State and local partners, the scope of the Commission’s work and how best to incorporate stakeholder input” on the issue areas the President directed the Commission to study, according to the department’s statement.
CEC along with other education and community groups are concerned about the lack of transparency of the Commission comprised solely of political appointees and the absence of expert stakeholders from education or the broader state and local community in the first meeting.
The Federal Commission on School Safety is accepting “recommendations on how to increase school safety” at email@example.com. CEC will be emailing recommendations to the Commission and requests that you share your submitted input to the Commission with us at firstname.lastname@example.org. The Commission needs to hear your voice!
