On December 3, CEC will celebrate the U.N. International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). The 2017 IDPD theme is “Transformation towards sustainable and resilient society for all”. This theme focuses on the enabling conditions for the transformative changes envisioned in the 2030 development agenda for Sustainable Development.
The 2030 Agenda pledges to “leave no one behind.” Persons with disabilities, as beneficiaries and agents of change, can fast track the process towards inclusive and sustainable development and promote a resilient society for all. Governments, persons with disabilities and their representative organizations, academic institutions and the private sector need to work as a team to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
The annual observance of the IDPD was proclaimed by the United Nations in 1992. The purpose is to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development, and to increase awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
