The recently published First Look Report, Characteristics of Private Schools in the United States: Results From the 2015–16 Private School Universe Survey, by The National Center for Education Statistics provides selected findings from the 2015-16 Private School Universe Survey (PSS) regarding private schools that were in operation during the 2015-16 school year. The data include information on school size, school level, religious orientation, association membership, geographic region, community type, and program emphasis. The PSS collects non-fiscal data biennially from the universe of private schools in the United States with grades kindergarten through twelve. There were more than 34,500 private schools in the United States in the fall of 2015, serving nearly 5 million students, according to the 2015-16 Private School Universe Survey. The study found that 5 percent of private schools in 2015-16 emphasized a special education program, 3 percent emphasized an alternative program and 10 percent emphasized an early childhood program.
