The Senate voted 59-40 on March 8 to rescind the U.S. Department of Education teacher preparation regulations, following the House vote to also rescind. The White House has said that the President supports the joint resolution and is expected to sign it into law. CEC members expressed their concern over the requirement of a state-based rating system for preparation programs. CEC believes that any changes to the law need to occur through a reauthorization process and not a regulatory process. As the Higher Education Act Reauthorization proceeds CEC will be advocating for provisions for well-prepared supported educators that serve children with exceptionalities. CEC will continue to advocate for proposals that will address the chronic shortages in special education through well-funded student loan forgiveness and scholarship programs.
