In support of recruiting and retaining talented educators with disabilities who effectively serve children, youth and their families – including all teacher candidates and teachers in classrooms, schools, and institutions of higher education – the CEC Board of Directors just approved CEC’s Policy on Educators with Disabilities. Personal experience with a disability often places educators with disabilities in a unique position to understand and effectively teach children and youth while being a role model of success. Educators within CEC’s membership embody a wide range of disabilities in learning, sensory, physical, and emotional areas, and CEC recognizes with disabilities bring to the field of education. CEC’s new policy addresses disclosure, privacy, and self – advocacy; self – identity; supports and accommodations; and legal responsibilities. Read the policy and watch for a more detailed description of how it was developed in the May/June issue of TEACHING Exceptional Children.
