Please write to your Senators asking them to sign on to a Dear Colleague letter being circulated by Senators Grassley and Casey in support of increased appropriations for Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Act.
As the sole federal initiative focusing on gifted education, a greater investment is needed in 2017 to adequately meet the needs of over 3 million students with gifts and talents throughout the country.
The Javits Act focuses on students who have been underserved in gifted and talented education programs, not due to a lack of ability, but because it can be difficult to assess their abilities properly and provide them with the right support to ensure that they become high achievers. The Javits Program is the only federal program dedicated specifically to these students; it funds research-based demonstration grants as well as dissemination of best practices to school across the country.
At a time when the nation is becoming more diverse and more students are living in poverty, our failure to develop high levels of talent in ALL our student populations has serious implications for our ability to compete in this truly global society.
