CEC shares the nation’s grief over the lives lost
in a Connecticut elementary school. Our thoughts are with the families of
everyone involved and our fellow educators.
As we all try to cope with this tragedy, we
would like to share an excellent tool created by our friends at the National
Education Association (NEA) designed for use during this type of tragedy,
providing advice to educators about how to talk about these incidents with children and youth
in an age-appropriate way. Our friends at the National PTA have similar
resources to assist students, families, schools and PTAs in coping with school
violence. Download the NEA guide. Download the PTA resources. For additional resources, please see the U.S.
Department of Education’s resources
or this statement
issued by the National Association of School Psychologists.
In addition, CEC has signed onto a statement sent to Congress today. This statement, written by researchers and expert practitioners, emphasizes the priority of keeping children safe by focusing on balance, communication connectedness and support. To read this statement, please click here.
CEC’s Division, the Council for Children with Behavioral Disorders (CCBD), has also issued a statement, which you can read here.
