The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Programs has released applications for new awards in Technology and Media Services for Individuals with Disabilities--Models Promoting Young Children's Use of Assistive Technology. The purpose of this program is to promote the development and use of technology in order to improve results for students with disabilities and to support educational media services as well as video description and closed captioning for classroom use.
These awards fall under established priorities for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act or IDEA, and pertain specifically to Part C and Part B preschool programs by supporting the implementation and evaluation of models for the effective use of assistive technology by children in those programs with disabilities. This award program hopes to provide increased availability of assistive technology by promoting implementation models that work by developing effective training models, developing child specific plans for use of assistive technology, finding sources of funding and coordinating programs to find, maintain and reuse assistive technology devices.

I'm a parent that homeschools an autistic child. We use many AT devices and make our own as well. No school in our area supported a communication device and the staff had little to no experience with them. I have educated myself in AT and AAC. I attended conferences and researched extensively on my own. Would I qualify for this program. I work with other children too as a habiltiation therapist. I do not have a degree in this field but I have more
experience than any teacher in the field of AT and AAC that I have come across. Would I be rejected in the application process or would my experience be valued?
