The National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities released this week a new issue brief which answers ten frequently asked questions about charter schools that will help the families and educators of students with disabilities navigate the surge in charter schools. The resource will also provide links to state specific resources that will provide specific information on how charter schools function in your state.
The issue brief clarifies important information beginning with defining a charter school and explaining how charter schools differ from tradition schools in terms of important aspects such as accountability, funding and the services that charter schools provide to children with disabilities. This is a one-stop shop that will help parents and educators of children and students with disabilities make sure that they have all the necessary information to make the right decision for their student or child.

This brief was very informative. Being from Washington state, I know little about charter schools and how they are set up to meet the need of student's with special needs. It is nice to know that the laws against discrimination still apply for these schools. Unfortunately, it is sad that the schools are not as discrimitory about the staff qualifications employed for the students. How is it possible to meet the needs for students with disabilities when they are being taught by professional with no prior knowledge or understanding of the laws?
