In mid-May, Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-CA) introduced the Setting New Priorities in Education Act (H.R. 1891), legislation that proposes to “weed out inefficient and unnecessary K-12 education programs”.
Of the 43 programs slated for elimination are programs that impact students with disabilities and/or gifts and talents, including the Jacob K. Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Act, the sole Federal investment in gifted education.
The Javits program is neither inefficient nor unnecessary. In fact, in its over 20 year existence the Javits program has led to new strategies for identifying and educating advanced students, particularly those form disadvantaged backgrounds.
Our nation cannot balance the national debt at the expense of our future leaders, innovators, and workforce.
