Last week, key members of Congress initiated a campaign to preserve funding for the only federal program dedicated to supporting the nation’s three million students with gifts and talents, the Jacob Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Act. This effort comes as Congress is considering billions of dollars in funding cuts, and President Obama has recommended eliminating dedicated funding for the Javits program. Urge your Representatives and Senators to join this campaign!
Senators Gassley (R-IA), Casey (D-PA); and Representatives Gallegly (R-CA), Courtney (D-CT), have circulated a letter to every Congressional office asking for members of Congress to join them in maintaining Javits funding. The more members of Congress who sign this letter, the more difficult it will be to cut or eliminate the Javits program. CEC’s Legislative Action Center makes contacting Congress easy and fast. In 2010, less than 2 cents out of every $100 of the federal K-12 education budget was devoted to our nation’s students with gifts and talents. Even worse, over the last five years, federal spending for the Javits program has been cut by 30% to $7.5 million, chronically underfunding this program at levels too low to fully achieve its nationwide goal of improving gifted education in America. Now, as policymakers are looking to make deep cuts, the Javits program is in danger of losing all funding.
